11/1/11 - The “Conversation”
We all have it. That conversation with yourself about two thirds of the way into a workout between you and yourself can be more difficult than any other conversation you’ll have. No, not even “The Birds and the Bees” talk makes me cringe more. The sincerity of the words with yourself when everything points to stopping, quitting, and/or crying outweighs even any, “It’s not me, it’s you” talk.
Regardless of how loud the music is or how hard you are breathing, you always hear your own mind loud and clear. The scary thing is is that it’s always just you and your thoughts alone.
Regardless of your fitness level, this conversation will come up. Simply facing your own self in uncomfortable situations like that of a workout, and not quitting is training. It is mental training. And, who can argue the value in that?
To me, the strength of the mind is unequivocally more valuable than any strength in the gym. To be one that is prepared and willing to continue when that little voice in your head begs you to stop is to be strong. You are building strength in more ways than you’ll ever know every time you have “the conversation.”
Given the mental training, you are capable of more than any physical body could achieve. When quit isn’t “in the cards” anymore, imagine what happens to your relationships, to your career, and to the nuances of life. Paying bills can get the best of us all. But, when you become more than someone that “works out alot” and you become the type of person that gladly welcomes adversity with the confidence that you will prevail– then, my friend, you are something special!
