When Alphas Fail

Chances are if you’re participating in this community, you’ve got a bit of alpha in you. You win at work. You win in relationships. You like success, and chances are you know how to find it.

As a coach, I recognize how critical this attitude can be to 1) getting in the door, and 2) earning fitness gains once you’re here. There is, however, a down side to this go-getter mentality, especially if you don’t know how to fail.

Often I see folks get completely discombobulated when things don’t go their way in the gym. “”Wait, what? I’m stuck. How the…? I drive an $80,000 car and I’m the leading rep 16 quarters in a row. I’ll be partner soon!” It’s amazing to me how so many uber successful people spin their wheels at failure. If I’ve learned anything in my short life thus far, it’s that those that can manage failure are the one’s you want on your team and they are the ones that are set up for the most robust chance as success.

An genuine obsession with success can’t really come with an allergy to failure, in my opinion. So, if you’re Johnny Alpha or Jane Alpha and you crush everything in life but can’t function when the barbell doesn’t do what you want it to, you might be able to get much more than you bargained for here by being an alpha even in the face of failure.
