Tension: Mandatory for Any Dance

Ballroom dancing is a balancing act. On one hand we have one’s ability to lead and on the other hand we have the other’s ability to follow. Since fluid dancing happens with shifts in these roles and seamless transitions, there is a third critical component to beautiful ballroom dancing. This third element is tension.

Two people who are too rigid with tension between them cannot move fluidly. They will clunk and misstep around in broken, disjointed movement. Similarly, with slack in the system between the two dancers there won’t be enough connection to keep accurate, deliberate movement. The one leading won’t be able to enact her desired direction until enough slack is removed from the system for her partner to follow properly.

Dancing needs proper tension. In fact, all relationships (organizational, personal, or romantic) require tension to move about with the intentionality and beauty of the Tango.

This notion should empower us to recognize changing levels of power, disagreement, and challenges as necessary means to maintain proper tension for a beautiful dance. Surely, tension can feel dangerous and disagreeable, but being loose is avoidance of the tension we need.
