Quality Is Never an Accident

Who makes your favorite ice cream? Look, I know it’s an odd question, but just think about your answer. If money was no object and you could have any pair of shoes you liked, what company’s shoes would you by? Similarly, if you could stay free at any brand of hotel for a year, which would you choose?

The interesting thing about this thought experiment is that it’s completely resistant to preferences. Whether you like red shoes or brown shoes, athletic shoes or dress shoe is beside the point. The people we want to buy ice cream from and the people that make the shoes we value most and the hotels we covet are never people who are semi-interested in their product or service. Regardless of your preferences above, we all respect and desire quality.

We won’t find the best ice creams, shoes, or hotels from purposeless effort. No one accidentally develops a five star hotel. They do it on purpose.

What is it about your life that makes you think you’ll accidentally live a remarkable life, understand remarkable love, or create remarkable value? Those things happen when you set out to do them intentionally.
