Sometimes it pays to take a hard line. One New York eatery did just that and my good friend, a now high powered Manhattan lawyer, was there to witness the scene. The setting was the maitre d’ podium at, Eleven Madison Park, a Michellin starred, world-class restaurant. It’s an award winning culinary experience that just so happens to have a dress code.
On this particular evening Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and his posse just arrived. Of course, “Zuck” came wearing his uniform: a soft hoodie, T-shirt, and jeans. Upon arrival, the maitre d’ approached Zuckerberg with a jacket. After all, he was the only one not wearing a sport coat and, therefore, was out of dress code.
As the maitre d’ was about to extend the coat offering to Mr. Zuckerberg, he was intercepted by one of the members of the Facebook posse.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the henchman genuinely offered. “That’s Mark… Zuckerberg.”
The maitre d’ politely responded, “And, this is New York..” extending the coat to Mr. Zuckerberg with a request to wear it before being seated.
This story because it’s about standards. When you hear this story, you can likely recognize that your opinion about sport coats or freedom of dress at dinner isn’t the point. It doesn’t matter what the dress code or standard is as much as the fact that the restaurant has one and decided to hold it.
After all, what’s a standard if it isn’t upheld?
