Virtues and the Un-Self-Conscious

Think of all that is virtuous. Being courageous or having humility, for example, are acts that are quite ironically un-self-conscious.

We can’t really say to ourselves, “I know one thing’s for certain and that’s that I am as humble as they come!” Correction. We can surely say we are humble, but saying so most specifically makes it less true.

Virtues are things that other people notice.

What they are specifically noticing is our virtuous doing without consciously knowing it. In fact, that’s where the beauty comes from specifically.

They say that all of life’s deepest truths are paradoxical and this virtue business is no different. If you aspire to be virtuous, you almost never can realize such a desired outcome in a self-conscious, contrived way.

Instead, the first step is to become a virtuous person whose actions unconsciously display your ideal virtues. The second step is that others tell you if you’re virtuous or not.

Keep going.
