Means to an End

The word ADULT is a funny one to me. For most of us we turn a certain age and all of a sudden we start to refer to ourselves as this word. We are over 18 years old after all, we are legal adults in the eyes of the law and we can do what we want. The ultimate freedom! However, these facts, though they may be true, do not change who we are.

Mark Manson talks about this developmental distinction in his second book, the title of which I will omit because it has a bad word and my mom reads these. He basically breaks down the human developmental stages into 3 categories based on characteristics rather than age. They are as follows:

Childhood = pleasure seeking and pain avoidance

Adolescence = Everything is transactional and seen as a trade-off

Adulthood = See everybody as an end in and of themselves, not simply a means

Most of us get stuck in the adolescent zone. So good news, we aren’t a bunch of children. Bad news is the adolescent stage isn’t much better. The only real difference is that we are able to play on social cues and navigate the social ladder more effectively than a child. However, in this stage we still use people and things as means to pleasurable ends.

Now ideally we want to achieve Manson’s definition of Adulthood, to be self-actualizing individuals. Which looks like being of service to others, giving and receiving advice, and when you find success turning around and helping the next one in line. Relatively common things that elevate us above transactional relationships and into meaningful engagement.

We have a saying around here at DEUCE, “You don’t need to work out to kick it” and we take that idea very seriously. We do not want you to see the gym as a simple means to an end but rather a place you can grow and learn and connect with people who care about you. Sure having a 6-pack and lifting 300lbs off of the ground is sick but my question to you is what is all of that doing for you? How are you becoming better as a person?

It’s an honor to stand witness to such a large community of ADULTS. Carry on.
