3 Ways to Persuade: Preachers, Prosecutors, Politicians

According to Philip Tetlock we tend to think and behave in one of three main archetypal roles: preachers, prosecutors, and politicians. Tetlock’s framework may help you understand how you wish to be heard and others attempt to be heard in the world.

Preachers take up the belief that they’ve seen the light and their role in the world is to serve the pulpit. Prosecutors get their point across by proving everyone wrong. Meanwhile, the politician archetype assumes he/she has constituents who he/she needs to win over.

As you can imagine, the preacher role and the prosecutor role have relinquished critical thinking and abstain from curiosity. They are busy peddling their point. Politicians flip flop in an effort to appeal to their audience by changing how they deliver their message.

Can spot your tendencies in this framework? Do you recognize preachers, prosecutors, and politicians around you?
