Indiana Jones-Level Ad Lib Your Life

If you’re even a mild fan of the Indiana Jones films, you’ll remember the iconic scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where “Indy” played by Harrison Ford encounters a towering villain wielding a sword in the souks. The face off builds as they square off a good distance from each other, eyes locked, and surrounded by a mob of villagers. The suspense of the moment builds with the villain performing some intimidating choreography and peacocking with his sword only to have the moment cut short with a surprising response from Ford who pulls out a gun and fires one shot from the hip killing his opponent without a fight.

It’s a peak scene in the film that is regarded as a favorite moment. It’s funny, unexpected, and perfectly effective. It also wasn’t the plan.

After shooting several long days in Tunisia in 130 degree heat, Speilberg and his team were struggling to complete this particular storyboard before a hard stop in the location. In addition, Ford was sick with a stomach bug. With a massive choreographed altercation between the sword and Indiana Jones’ whip planned, the heat of the moment weighed on the production team.

In an effort to “solve for X”, someone proposed the idea of Ford pulling out a gun and being done with the scene. The rest is history.

News Flash: it’ll never be possible to perfectly plan the future, so the greatness you’re after will likely have much to do with how you solve problems when things go wrong. Many times the best moments are off script anyway.
