9/2/14 - Coach Me!

Just yesterday I was training with a couple of friends who were in town. It’s worth mentioning that both Corey and Taylor have resumes that could fill volumes. In addition, they are just incredible people.

For some time I’ve been extremely interested in studying the Conjugate Method, which is the training method used by the world’s strongest people at the world’s strongest gym, Westside Barbell, in Ohio. Taylor, coincidentally, was the head coach at CrossFit Conjugate (Westside’s CrossFit Affiliate) before becoming a Marine Officer. Needless to say, this was an incredible chance to learn.

Just before we began training yesterday, Corey asked me most deliberately, “Hey, do you want coaching or if I see something should I leave you alone?”

I chimed back annoyed, “Dude, coach me.”

We understood each other, however. He was asking permission to coach me because athletes aren’t always looking to be coached, especially experienced ones. As a coach, I know this first hand, and so does he. However, just as important was his courteous question, I think, was my obvious answer.

In a program as coaching forward as this one at DEUCE, be sure to come in with a mindset that would answer Corey’s question just as obviously as I did. If not, you might be in the wrong headspace to take advantage of your time here.
