Authority Figures, Consumers Complicit

Consider that the fitness industry might be the only billion dollar industry in the United States with failing results. If car makers made cars that didn’t start or turn left at the volumes and frequencies that fitness products and services render no positive adaptation in the health of their clients there would be hell to pay. Yet, business is booming.

Why?

Human nature doesn’t compel us towards discomfort and pseudo-leaders in the fitness industry are cashing in on the weakness of the human psyche. Quality training is mundane and difficult. Neither characteristic is good for ringing big at the cash register.

The result?

Ignorant people who would never prefer the harder of two options (and rightfully so) are being told that their fears are correct. Furthermore, these authorities in fitness confirm these fears and sell a less principled, less effective solution to these people. The consumer is then allowed to be off the hook and can no longer be blamed for their lack of fitness because, after all, they’re trying.

I’d call for this failing industry to be held accountable, but the trouble is most American consumers would rather be innocent and unfit than held accountable. As a result, we are a blip on the massive radar screen of the fitness industry in America calling for a different standard.
