9/4/18 - “I Don’t Like Cheese”
No, I really don’t. It’s been a hard, fast truth for me since I can remember, too. Macaroni and cheese? Never. I wouldn’t even sit next to my brother when he’d eat it as a kid. I can’t stand the stuff. Nachos at a baseball game? Not me.
I don’t like cheese.
You see, it’s a smell thing and a taste thing. I think it’s gross. Sometimes I just can’t handle the texture of it, either. I just don’t like it. It’s not that you have to agree with me, but, in my opinion, it’s flat out gross.
I mean, except I’ll have cheese on a cheese burger. Pizza is an exception, too. To be fair, as I’m getting older, there are some hard cheeses that I enjoy. I won’t eat a lot of it, but I definitely can appreciate a good wine pairing. You know, the fancy ones. Let me rephrase this.
I don’t like cheese sometimes.
This, my friends, is called nuance. While my feelings about enjoying cheese (or lack thereof) couldn’t matter less, there’s an important notion in this thought. There’s a great chance you’re making the same mistake I made for four paragraphs above, except you’re likely making it with things that matter much greater. We all do it more than we’d like to admit. Need help? Look at your politics, judgements of people’s morals, opinions about music, and anything else that you like to take a stand about.
I challenge you to be a bit more complex than to make claims that sound like “either this or that”. Likely, many of your judgements and perceptions are best defined as “this and that”. It’s much easier to make life black and white, but it’s not more accurate that way.
