12/4/15 - Rain Delay Mentality

I’ll never forget how screwed I’d be during my playing days if I let my mind think that we weren’t going to play during a rain delay. Recommitting my mind to the task of catching an entire baseball game wasn’t a switch I could easily turn back on. During the heaviest of down pours, I’d sit in the club house forcefully trying to convince myself that we’d play.

Letting the thoughts in the back of my mind of the heavy rain canceling the game become a reality was performance suicide. The few times I let this happen, the torrential down pours would clear up, the tarp would come off the field, and it was time to run out there and be a high performing individual. That’s a lose-lose scenario.

Accomplishing anything difficult is this way. If you’re mind, leaves the task at hand. You’re done for. Staying mentally on board means having a chance.
