10/7/11 - “Maintaining”

Yea yea, I’m full of ideologies, I know, but I like them. There’s one, though, that is mine. It didn’t come from a text book, but I’ll go to bat for its credibility any day. It’s short and simple:

You’re either getting better, or you’re getting worse.

One day I’ll debate Socrates in heaven whether it is logically sound or not. Until then, it’s true blue.

I don’t subscribe to the idea of coasting. In my world, if your idlely standing by and marking time, you’re getting worse. So, I guess, with that premise, my philosophy holds true. If staying the same means you’re getting worse, then you’re either progressing or regressing– right?

All is busy at FFOTB.

Often we see that the logic holds true in our daily lives. If you see a 280lb guy “giving ’em hell down” on the old high school track one lap at a time, you probably might not utter the things under your breathe that you would if you saw the same hefty young man enjoying a “Love it!” size treat from Cold Stone Creamery.

Same guy. Different directions. Different reality.

How about the comeback story we see all the time in sports? Someone’s on a performance slide, and they are a disgrace. Take the same athlete, in the same season even, with a comeback kid story and the perception couldn’t be sweeter! “Come on– Look at where he came from!”

So, if you’re not content with where you are, then you’re in luck, because it’s not about where you are. It’s about where you are going.

Plus, if you’re ready to hang your hat on where you are, because it’s “good enough,” by my definition, you’re actually getting worse. Let’s keep the focus on getting better, and enjoy the ride!
